A cold front crossed the region during the mid-morning hours of December 11, 2024. Behind this front, winds increased significantly from the west-northwest. At Aho in Watauga County, a home weather station recorded a wind gusts of 62 mph. Additionally, wind gusts of 58 mph or greater were common at this location for approximately 90 minutes.

Additionally, wind gusts of 58 mph or greater were common at this location for approximately 90 minutes between 4:00 PM EST and 5:30 PM EST. Surry County had estimated winds gust of 40 mph. However, with wet soils, trees were brought down over different portions of the county.
