Event narrative

An area of 2 to 3.5 inches fell across the county. 3.0 inches of snow was measured 6.5 miles SE of Rice, MN.

Wider weather episode

A surface low tracked southeast from southern Alberta through North Dakota and continued into central Minnesota. This was a standard Clipper-type low with limited moisture. The primary accumulating snow started during the evening hours on January 11th, with most of the snow falling overnight into Sunday morning. The dry slot extended up to I-94 and led to periods of freezing drizzle along & south of I-94. The end result was a swath of 3-5 inches of snow across central Minnesota and 1-3 inches along I-94 into western Wisconsin. A thin glaze of ice was also reported in portions of the Twin Cities metro area.

Some of the highest snowfall amounts were:

6.5 inches just south of Pillager, MN (Morrison).

4.5 inches in Rush City, MN (Chisago).

4.0 inches in Mora, MN (Kanabec).

4.0 inches in Little Falls, MN (Morrison).

3.9 inches in Isle, MN (Mille Lacs).
