Wider weather episode
A potent shortwave along the base of an upper-level longwave trough began dropping southward across Pennsylvania during the late evening hours of January 27, 2025 and into the early morning hours of January 28, 2025. Locally heavy snow showers began to develop across western Pennsylvania during the morning hours of January 28 before encountering marginal instability in central Pennsylvania, providing a favorable environment for snow squalls. These snow squalls began approaching Interstate 80, where snow squalls were observed before moving into an environment with less instability, thus allowing for snow squalls to weaken as they progressed into east-central Pennsylvania.
