Extreme Cold/Wind Chill — Greeley, Kansas

Event narrative

Emergency Manager reported that part of NW Greeley county

experienced a brief power outage due to the wind. The event occurred

at 1721 this evening. Fire crews were dispatched to provide

suppression if needed. Wheatland Electric was able to repair and

restore power quickly. Power was restored around 1830. The Emergency Manager also stated I really believe that it was the rapid fall in temperature that caused the connector to break and the power line to fall. 20 MPH shouldn't have caused that. Kansas Mesonet site (TUNK1) near Tribune reported falling wind chills with the front around a 21 degree drop in 3 hours. Wind gusts at that site were gusting 20-23 mph during the time fram.

Wider weather episode

A strong cold front filtered Arctic air across the High Plains with numerous days of -20 to -30 wind chills. A power outage across portions of Tribune in Greeley county was also thought to have been related to the rapid falling temperatures.
