Event narrative
Mainly 4 to 5 inches of snow fell across the zone, with a changeover to light freezing rain and drizzle towards and after midnight for a portion of the overnight, followed by another round of lighter snow early in the morning. Trained spotters reported 5.0 inches in Smithtown, 4.3 inches in Hauppauge. NWS Employees reported 4.5 inches at 1 N Setauket-East Setauket, 4.5 inches in Centereach, and 4.4 inches in Stony Brook. Islip Airport reported 0.10 inches of freezing rain.
Wider weather episode
A progressive low pressure system emerged out of the Tennessee Valley and quickly moved across the region bringing an accumulating wet snowfall. Most places received an advisory level snowfall with mainly 3 to 4 inches of snow, with some locations getting slightly higher and lower amounts. This was a front end quick thump driven by warm advection snowfall which fell primarily during the evening hours of the 8th. The snow quickly tapered to some light freezing rain and drizzle in spots after the initial thump. Some locations further east changed back to a lighter snow before ending in the early morning.
