Event narrative
An accumulating snow occurred during the mid to late evening before transitioning to a wintry mix with a period of light freezing rain / drizzle for a portion of the overnight. Cocorahs reported 3.0 inches in Fair Lawn and 3.0 inches in Oakland. The public reported 2.6 inches in Franklin Lakes.
Wider weather episode
A progressive low pressure system emerged out of the Tennessee Valley and quickly moved across the region bringing an accumulating wet snowfall. Most places received an advisory level snowfall with mainly 3 to 4 inches of snow, with some locations getting slightly higher and lower amounts. This was a front end quick thump driven by warm advection snowfall which fell primarily during the evening hours of the 8th. The snow quickly tapered to some light freezing rain and drizzle in spots after the initial thump.
