Event narrative

Zone average snowfall of 3.1 inches.

Wider weather episode

A weak, upper-level disturbance led to widespread light to locally moderate snowfall across eastern New York on Friday, December 20, 2024. The heaviest snow fell within the Capital Region and northeast Catskills where three to six inches were common due to a period of moderate snow that appeared to be terrain-enhanced. Elsewhere, accumulations generally amounted to between one to three inches. Though this was not the first snowfall of the season, it certainly behaved as such, causing very slick road conditions especially throughout the Capital District and numerous accidents were reported via social media and from NWS employees during their commute into the office in the afternoon.

Key Impacts: travel delays, vehicle accidents.
