Event narrative

Two boys fell through ice into Glasmann Pond in South Ogden while fishing, approximately around 4:30 pm LST. While one was able to get out, the other was rescued by divers and later passed from the injuries sustained. Temperatures nearby reported from the Ogden-Hinckley Airport ASOS (KOGD) around the time of the incident were 39F, with clear skies reported. The maximum temperature that day (1/27) was 40F, the prior day (1/26) was 40F, and one more day prior (1/25) was 35F.

Wider weather episode

A period of cold weather helped form ice on freezable bodies of water across the area, with a subsequent warmup leading to more instability on ice. Late in the month, two boys fell through ice, resulting in one fatality.
