Event narrative

Trained spotter near 26 mile Haines Highway reported that 9 inches of snow had fallen, beginning overnight and lasting until about noon on Christmas Eve. Haines Customs at 40 mile measured 8.1 inches at 7am that morning with snow continuing at the time.

Wider weather episode

A front brought moisture northward into the area causing a period of freezing rain, then heavy rates caused a change to snow fell over the northern highways at elevation. This was the first in a series of snow events after a cold snap for this area, while sea level locations saw mainly rain.
