Arctic air surged over the Northern Plains and remained across the area for several days. The coldest air and lowest wind chill values in our area were across far northwest South Dakota, where air temperatures were as low as around 35 below, with wind chill values as low as 45 to 50 below during the overnight and early morning hours for several days. Elsewhere across the plains from northwest into south central South Dakota, wind chill values dropped to 30 to 40 below at times during the overnight and early morning for 1 to 2 days.
