Some areas in Wythe County received one to four inches of snow, with the higher amounts confined to the higher terrain in the western part of the county. Wider weather episode

A clipper system tracked from the Ohio Valley into the Central Appalachians Thursday into Friday. The associated upper level disturbance enhanced lift across the area, resulting in snow beginning to fall on the morning of January 3rd and continuing through the day.

Bands of brief heavy snow brought localized higher amounts of snow, and northwest winds behind the passage of the clipper system resulted in upslope flow and additional snowfall.
