Event narrative

A trained weather spotter measured 6 inches of snow had fallen throughout the day Sunday the 5th in Haines with light snow adding another 3 inches by the following morning. Another trained spotter south of Haines on the Chilkat Peninsula reported 9 inches of new snow at 1140pm on the 5th, with heavy snowfall still underway. Five inches of that had been since around 4 pm Sunday. Snow ended early on the 6th with a short period of freezing rain reported at the airport. The COOP observer in town had 9.7 inches of snow during this period. Measurements further to the north up the highway were lower.

Wider weather episode

A frontal band advancing north overran cold air previously put in place by an outflow event. Although areas further south saw a fairly quick changeover from snow to rain, Haines, Skagway, and their respective highways maintained snow for a far longer duration.
