Event narrative
Light snow moved into the area late morning with a band of more moderate snow developing during the afternoon. Total accumulation was generally around a half inch to an inch and a half with the highest observation from a COOP observer near Modoc of around 1.9 inches.
Wider weather episode
A strong upper level trough moved into the southeastern US with a developing surface low moving near the Georgia and South Carolina coast. Light snow began in the morning but as warm advection and frontogenesis strengthened, a band of moderate to heavy snow developed by the evening of the 21st, continuing into the overnight with amounts exceeding 2 inches in the southeastern Midlands.
