Event narrative

Light snow moved into the area in the early afternoon with a brief period of moderate during the late evening. Snowfall accumulation was generally between a half inch and an inch and a half. The highest reported amount was 1.5 inches from the Johnston COOP observer.

Wider weather episode

A strong upper level trough moved into the southeastern US with a developing surface low moving near the Georgia and South Carolina coast. Light snow began in the morning but as warm advection and frontogenesis strengthened, a band of moderate to heavy snow developed by the evening of the 21st, continuing into the overnight with amounts exceeding 2 inches in the southeastern Midlands.
