Event narrative

Utah Highway Patrol troopers reported a crash occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. on the southbound side of U.S. Highway 89 in Fruit Heights. All 20 vehicles involved were headed south when the pileup occurred. Authorities said drivers were traveling too fast for the slick, snow-covered roads. Around the same time, a separate crash involving nine vehicles occurred on the northbound side of the highway. Troopers stated weather was a contributing factor in this crash as well, and some drivers may have lost control while looking toward the earlier southbound pileup. At the time of the event, light snow had created accumulations in spots on area roads.
