Event narrative

Saipan and Tinian remained in severe drought (D2) through the month of February, with vegetation on plantations turning brown, and wildfires reported across the CNMI and Guam. Saipan International Airport ended the month with 2.05 inches with the Tinian International Airport reporting only 1.31 inches. Both islands need an inch weekly to meet minimum water needs.

Wider weather episode

An active trade-wind/ITCZ helped to limit the development or worsening of drought across RMI, FSM and ROP. Seasonally dry trade-wind pattern continue for the Marianas.
