Event narrative
Observations from the Kotzebue ASOS and local NWS employee revealed heavy snow and high wind setting in early on the morning of the 17th. By afternoon blizzard conditions with wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph and visibilities around 1/4 mile prevailed for several hours.
Wider weather episode
A potent low pressure center in the southern Bering Sea moved north into the Bering Strait and brought with it heavy Snowfall for Alaska's west coast along with very strong easterly surface winds. The result was a prolonged period of snow and very low visibilities due to blowing snow.
