Strong surface cyclogenesis developed over western Kansas on the first in response to a deepening long wave trough in the western United States. Strong winds aloft out ahead of the long wave trough were able to mix down to the surface under deep boundary layer mixing. Although widespread high winds were not observed, a few sites recorded brief severe wind gusts. These winds also brought minor visibility restrictions due to blowing dust.
