2025-02-11 to 2025-02-12 · Yancey, North Carolina
Wider weather episode
Precipitation overspread the Carolina mountains and North Carolina foothills during the evening of the 11th in association with an approaching frontal system. While temperatures were above freezing across much of the area, a pocket of cold air developed along the Blue Ridge escarpment, resulting in precipitation falling as freezing rain there for a prolonged period. Total ice accretion was mainly in the 0.10-0.25 range across this area, although some pockets along the continental divide saw more than 0.25 inch, with isolated to scattered power outages reported. Meanwhile, areas across the western halves of Buncombe, Henderson, Yancey, and Mitchell Counties, and much of the southern half of Caldwell and Alexander Counties only received rain.
