Very cold air and gusty winds from the northwest overspread the North Carolina mountains during the evening of the 20th in the wake of an arctic cold front. Air temperatures in the single digits and teens combined with winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph to produce wind chills of 0 to -10 in the valleys, and -10 to -20 above 3500 feet. Even colder temperatures and stronger winds produced wind chill of -20 and colder above 5000 feet.
