Event narrative

Strong north and northwest winds combined with periods of moderate snowfall to create an extended period of blizzard conditions. Wind gusts in excess of 35 mph and visibilities around 1/4 mile persisted for for almost 30 hours at Shaktoolik (PFSH).

Wider weather episode

A storm system dropped southwestwards across northern and central Alaska which brought a potent cold front through the Norton Sound. Northeast offshore winds over the eastern Norton Sound combined with light snow to produce blizzard conditions.
