Extreme drought was introduced to the northern tier of the zone.

Wider weather episode

April saw below normal precipitation across much of the state, resulting in a significant expansion of Extreme Drought conditions, mainly along and west of the Rio Grande Valley. The below normal precipitation combined with several strong wind events allowed for the worsening drought conditions.
