Event narrative

Several trees fell down onto power lines along Route 16 near Big Branch Road. This resulted in local power outages in and around the town of Welch.

Wider weather episode

A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms pressed through West Virginia just after midnight on March 31st due to an advancing cold front. After causing tree and power line damage in Ohio and Kentucky, storms then entered into the northeast portions of the state and inflicted similar damage as strong bursts of wind passed overhead. Storms intensified once more as they approached southeast West Virginia a few hours later, causing more power outages due to downed trees and power lines. Overnight convection then pushed out of the area as the sun began to rise for the day.
