Strong southerly winds gusted to 35 to 45 miles per hour through the day on March 5 across Somerset County. The strongest winds occurred ahead of a line of convection in the late afternoon. Broadcast media reported a large tree knocked over from the strong winds, causing fencing damage at 4:30 PM EST.

A strong area of low pressure (980 mb) slowly moved northeast across the Great Lakes on March 5. A strong low level jet developed ahead of the associated cold front across portions of the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore on March 5, resulting in strong southerly winds ahead of convection.
