Event narrative
An NWS survey team determined that damage near Ginny Point Marina was consistent with winds from severe thunderstorm straight-line winds of 80 miles per hour. Other locations across the county saw significant tree damage which was likely from straight-line winds of 65 to 75 miles per hour.
Wider weather episode
A deep trough over the Midwest and surface low near the Great Lakes brought a robust cold front into the Mid Atlantic region. A strongly-forced area of linear convection moved from west to east across portions of central into eastern Virginia. These storms mostly produced strong to severe straight line wind gusts but one waterspout moved ashore from the York River into Gloucester county, causing EF0 damage.
