Heavy snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour occurred during this event between Essex and Marias Pass along U.S. Highway 2. Marias Pass received 7 inches of snow, accompanied by northeast winds gusting to 25 mph. The COOP observer at Essex measured 5.1 inches of snow.
Wider weather episode
A strong trough dug south out of British Columbia, pulling modified arctic air across the Continental Divide. This brought periods of moderate to heavy snow to northwest Montana. Some locations received enough snow for slush to accumulate on roads, causing slick conditions during the day.
