Winter Storm — Gallatin Valley, Montana

2025-02-07 · Gallatin Valley, Montana

Event narrative

Trained spotter reported greater than 4 inches over a 6 hour span in the Gallatin Valley. Several sources reported winter storm-like impacts, including very low visibility and difficult travel. Although 6 inches of snow was not observed in this zone, the rate warranted a winter storm warning.

Wider weather episode

A strong temperature gradient across Central MT and vicinity combined with moisture streaming northward ahead of a more broad Pacific trough to result in some overrunning snow. The snow became locally intense around Bozeman a bit south of where the temperatures gradient was strongest, which prompted Winter Storm Warnings.
