A deep upper level trough moved from the Great Basin into the central Rockies on May 18th. Strong mid to upper level winds at the base of the trough moved over New Mexico during this time. Deep daytime mixing along with the development of a 992 mb surface low over eastern Colorado resulted in gusty southwest to west winds across much of the state. Brief high wind gusts were observed at a few sites across the central and northeast highlands during the early to mid afternoon hours. Southwest to west winds tapered off across the region at around sunset.
