Two men were fishing on southern Lake Michigan near East Chicago's steel mill when their 19-foot vessel capsized during the afternoon of the 21st. One man was able to swim to shore and was transported to a local hospital where he recovered. The other man, a 73 year old, did not survive and his body was recovered later that afternoon. A Gale Warning was in effect at the time advertising hazardous boating conditions. The Harrison-Dever Crib was consistently reporting 50 to 55 mph gusts at the time of the incident and the water temperature was recorded nearby at 37 degrees.
