Event narrative

Wagontire RAWS recorded a peak gust of 64 knots (74 mph) in Harney county, Oregon due to high winds that mixed to the surface from an atmospheric river. Sustained winds at Wagontire were 39 knots (45 mph) during the same hour that peak gusts were observed. At the same time, Riddle Mountain mesonet had a peak gust of 60 knots (70 mph), Basque Hills mesonet reached 57 knots (66 mph), and Frenchglen mesonet reached 55 knots (63 mph).

Wider weather episode

Extremely strong west-southwesterly winds aloft carried tropical moisture into the area. In southeast Oregon, winds mixed down to the surface causing significant wind speeds to be observed at all elevations.
