Burns Junction mesonet recorded a peak gust of 62 knots (71 mph) in Malheur county, Oregon due to high winds that mixed to the surface from an atmospheric river. Sustained winds at Burns Junction were 37 knots (42 mph) during the same hour that peak gusts were observed. At the same time, Grassy Mountain mesonet had a peak gust of 50 knots (58 mph).
Wider weather episode
Extremely strong west-southwesterly winds aloft carried tropical moisture into the area. In southeast Oregon, winds mixed down to the surface causing significant wind speeds to be observed at all elevations.
