Wider weather episode
An upper-level trough digging into the plains on the morning of the 19th resulted in broad diffluent level flow over the lower Ohio Valley. A surface low moving from Kansas into northern Missouri in the afternoon brought continued strong southerly flow at the surface. Although instability was modest, 500-1000J/kg, 80-90kts of deep layer shear and plenty of low-level shear set the stage for a minor severe thunderstorm event in the early evening. Scattered thunderstorms developed over southern Illinois in the late afternoon and eventually formed into a line as they moved east across southwest Indiana in the early evening. Quarter size hail fell near Stendal and Pikeville just before the storms exited the region.
