Dust Storm — Northwest Pinal County, Arizona
2025-03-01 · Northwest Pinal County, Arizona
Event narrative
Near zero visibility due to dense blowing dust from strong winds resulted in a minor auto accident near Arizona City. No injuries were reported.
Wider weather episode
A potent low pressure system moved through the Desert Southwest, generating strong winds across much of the region. Peak afternoon and early evening wind gusts upwards of 25-40 mph out of the south were observed across much of south-central AZ. The combination of the strong winds and the very dry soil conditions led to areas of blowing dust with some areas across southern Maricopa and Northern Pinal Counties reporting near zero visibility. Near Tonopah AZ, a fiery multi-vehicle collision pileup resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries occurred on the eastbound lanes of I-10. A shallow plume of dense blowing dust was observed on satellite imagery during the time of the accident, and although not officially confirmed, the dust is believed to have played a major role in the cause of the accident.
