Strong S/SE winds developed across western North Carolina mountains during the late evening of the 4th into the early morning of the 5th in advance of a strong frontal system. Brief periods of damaging wind gusts were reported across portions of Macon and Graham Counties, resulting in numerous downed trees and power lines, scattered power outages, and minor structural damage. Winds remained strong as they shifted to the WNW in the wake of the front during the daylight hours. This resulted in some additional tree damage, with one tree falling on a recreational vehicle and seriously injuring an occupant in western McDowell County.
