The South Padre Island Coast Guard station recorded a brief burst of gale force gusts just after 1 AM CST March 28th, as winds shifted from north to northwest following a recycling of strong thunderstorms near/along the Lower Texas coast. Winds peaked at 36.54 knots at 1:18 AM CST, and quickly dropped below gale force soon after.
Wider weather episode
A strong upper level disturbance combined with a stationary front to produce periods of strong to severe thunderstorms on land that pushed across the Lower Texas Gulf and Laguna Madre waters during the morning of March 27th and again during the late evening of the same day and post-midnight hours of the 28th.
