In the midst of a passing low pressure system, strong thunderstorms crossed into southwest Virginia on the evening of April 14th. These storms were notorious for producing very large hail as they traveled through the Ohio Valley and into West Virginia throughout the afternoon, and this bled into Buchanan County with a single observance of ping pong sized hail occurring in Hurley. Activity then quickly pressed eastward into central Virginia for the remainder of the evening.
