Event narrative
Stamey Cove Road was washed out earlier this morning by the flooded Tusquittee Creek. Water approached at least one house, flooding the front yard. Tusquittee Creek Road is closed along with a reported 7 other roads in Clay County. Creek gauge near Hayesville crested at 19.8 feet at 8:50 AM. Pictures shared via Facebook show Pine Log Creek has also escaped its banks and flooded backyards and low-lying lands along the creek. Water appears to be near at least one house in the photo.
Wider weather episode
A cold front swept through the southern Appalachian region on April 6th, exiting the area to the east during the morning hours on April 7th. This front produced several hours of moderate to heavy rainfall in the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. This rainfall caused flooding along Tusquittee Creek near Hayesville.
