Event narrative
A trained spotter at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron observed nickel size hail from a severe thunderstorm tracking just south of the town.
Wider weather episode
A backdoor front across northeast NM during the day progressed southwest to along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains during the evening hours. Strong upslope flow resulted in the quick development of a severe thunderstorm between Ute Park and Cimarron just before sunset. Nickel size hail was observed in the town of Cimarron with golf ball size hail in the core of the storm at Philmont Scout Ranch, a few miles south of Cimarron. This severe storm progressed east between NM 58 and NM 21 before gradually weakening and dissipating around Springer.
