Winter Storm — Haines Borough and Klukwan, Alaska
2025-01-29 to 2025-01-30 · Haines Borough and Klukwan, Alaska
Event narrative
Two bands of snow moved through on the 29th and DOT in Haines estimated 8 to 12 inches of snow had fallen by early morning on the 30th. Other observers in town confirmed these amounts in the 8am hour, however the Customs station 40 miles to the NW only measured 3.5 inches. One spotter in town noted that around 10 inches of the 12 inches that he measured had fallen with the second band overnight. Periods of light snow continued through the morning on the 30th, then strong W-NW winds increased with gusts of 30-40 mph and blowing snow causing visibility down to 1 mile into the evening. The snowfall through this later period did not accumulate as much.
Wider weather episode
Low pressure set up off the coast of Yakutat causing bands of snow showers to train over the region. This made for a long duration event with some locations seeing equally long breaks between the snow showers. Warning level rates were observed during the bands of snow and observers added them together.
