2025-04-21 · near Municipal Yacht Harbor - Weatherstem, Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Maurepas, Gulf of Mexico
Event narrative
A Weatherflow Tempest weather station along Rue Chardonnay in Kenner measured a thunderstorm wind gust of 46 mph or 40 knots.
Wider weather episode
On the afternoon of April 21st, a cold front approaching the region began to stall over central Louisiana as upper-level support and steering flow shifted northeastward. With the front losing its dynamical push, storms developed ahead of it across the New Orleans area and became slow-moving due to the lack of steering flow. As these storms moved across Lake Pontchartrain, they produced periods of gusty thunderstorm winds over the lake. The activity gradually weakened and dissipated near sunset as instability decreased.
