Downed trees and power lines in the Vansant area resulted in power outages in and around the community.

Wider weather episode

On the evening of May 8th, a few strong thunderstorms ahead of a cold front arrived into southwestern Virginia. These storms had a history of causing downed trees and power lines as they swept through West Virginia, and caused similar damage in the town of Vansant. The cold front slid through the state late that night, bringing the risk of severe weather to an end.
