Wider weather episode
In the midst of hot and humid weather, eastern Kentucky experienced several days of strong thunderstorms from May 13th through the 16th. As daytime heating got underway during the late morning hours, shower and thunderstorm development thrived in this unstable environment, with some storms growing strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts. This resulted in downed trees and power lines in the area, causing local power outages for many residents in eastern Kentucky. The weather pattern finally changed on the evening of May 16th after a cold front swept through the Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians.
