Storm chaser photo showed a hail stone approximately 3.25 inches long by 2.5 inches wide fell in Joplin.
The wider storm
A Northern Plains low pressure system, a northeast-to-southwest oriented stationary front across North Texas, and shortwave trough traversing the Texas Panhandle were all contributing factors to the development of widespread severe weather May 16 and 17. A highly unstable environment led to many instances of large hail and damaging winds.
