The entire zone remained in Extreme(D3) drought through the month of May. The Cooperative Observer in Elk reported 0.79 inches of precipitation which was 0.20 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

Another month with below normal precipitation, especially over the lower elevations lead to more areas transitioning from Extreme(D3) drought to Exceptional(D4) drought.
