Thunderstorm wind gusts were estimated by a trained spotter.

Wider weather episode

An isolated severe thunderstorm formed ahead of a modest short wave trough and moved through McHenry County, with estimated 90 mph thunderstorm wind gusts causing extensive damage to the grain elevator at Voltaire. Two large grain bins were blown completely over with other bins damaged. In addition, the grain leg connecting all the bins from the main terminal was blown off. The thunderstorm then weakened as it moved off to the southeast, but additional storms developed along its outflow. One of these storms became severe over Kidder County, producing 70 mph wind gusts.
