Event narrative

Multiple reports were received from the public that most west-facing windows were broken at Hotel Settles in Big Spring due to damaging wind-driven hail. The time of occurrence is estimated from radar. The cost of damages and the maximum wind gust are also estimated.

Wider weather episode

Upslope flow resulted in the development of splitting storms in the Davis Mountains. The right movers tracked into Pecos and Brewster counties, and at least one of these storms produced damaging winds. One of the left-movers tracked towards Midland and then basically followed I-20 all the way to Colorado City. This storm produced damaging winds and large hail, which caused extensive damage in Big Spring. Later that night, a MCS developed and moved into the northern Permian Basin and produced severe straight-line winds.
