Strong west to northwest winds gusted around 45-47 mph in the early morning hours of May 31 between 1:30 AM EST and 3:30 AM EST across portions of Dorchester County near the Chesapeake Bay. The strongest gust was 47 miles per hour at 2:30 AM EST at the Bishops Head Pier mesonet.

A deepening area of low pressure moved northeast from northern Virginia across the Mid Atlantic and into New England from the night of May 30 into the morning of May 31. Strong west to northwest winds developed behind a cold front across portions of the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore in the early morning hours of May 31 behind the associated cold front.
