Moderate (D1) drought conditions over most of Hayes County, deteriorated to severe (D2) drought over the eastern third of the county by the end of May. The cooperative observer at Hayes Center reported 4.46 inches of precipitation for May. This was 1.52 inches above the normal of 2.94 inches.

Wider weather episode

Drought conditions remained largely unchanged across western and north central Nebraska in May. There was some limited improvements over northern Nebraska, with some deterioration in drought conditions over southwestern Nebraska.
