The South Dakota Department of Transportation Road Weather Information System station 4 miles west of Trail City recorded a peak wind gust of 62 mph, associated with a decaying thunderstorm heat burst.
Wider weather episode
Scattered thunderstorms developed in the late afternoon and evening, producing large hail and high winds. A peak gust of 76 mph measured at the South Dakota Department of Transportation Road Weather Information Station (SDDOT RWIS) 17 miles west of the town of Polo, and 72 mph on the SDDOT RWIS 9 miles north northwest of Vivian.
As storms dissipated they generated several heat bursts in which temperatures increased by 3 to 8 degrees and dewpoints dropped by as much as 20 degrees. There were multiple reports of strong winds associated with these heat bursts across central and north-central South Dakota.
