Hail — Gates, North Carolina
2025-06-11 · near Acorn Hill, Gates, North Carolina
Event narrative
An emergency manager reported dime to marble sized hail in Acorn Hill. However, given the radar presentation and ambiguity of marble sizing, the largest hail stone is estimated to have been around the size of a quarter. The largest hail likely fell just to the northeast over the Great Dismal Swamp.
Wider weather episode
A weak surface low formed along a stationary front across the eastern Carolinas to the Virginia Eastern Shore. This allowed for scattered storms to develop across portions of northeast North Carolina during the afternoon. An isolated storm produced severe hail.
